KazAtomExpo 2010: A Key Event in the Nuclear Sector

On 19-21 May 2010, Korme Exhibition Complex in Astana will be hosting a key event in the nuclear sector of Kazakhstan and Central Asia, the 1st Kazakhstan International Forum on Nuclear Power and Industry – KazAtomExpo 2010. This event is held in Kazakhstan for the first time. It is organised by the Kazakhstan exhibition company Iteca, jointly with ITE Group (UK).
The forum combines the exhibition and the conference. Exhibitors include leading nuclear enterprises, while the conference offers a place for meetings between specialists of the nuclear industry, power engineering and allied sectors.

The main KazAtomExpo 2010 event is the exhibition which presents the world’s latest developments in nuclear power and industry. Apart from nuclear giants such as KazAtomProm NAC JSC and GKAE RosAtom, exhibitors include leading Kazakhstan, Russian and foreign nuclear companies, and their partners: suppliers of equipment, goods and services. Exhibitors include 40 companies from Germany, Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine. The core pool of exhibitors includes local companies (50% of all exhibitors). Russian enterprises are broadly represented (33%) at KazAtomExpo 2010.

KazAtomExpo 2010 exhibitors include KazAtomProm NAC JSC, Kazakhstan Electricity Grid Operating Company (KEGOC JSC), KEMM 2030 LLP, Kemel NS LLP, MAEK-KazAtomProm LLP, Grundfos, ENERGOCENTER ASIA LLP, ЕАТС LLP, Atlas Copco Central Asia LLP, Belkamit JV JSC, ICAND LLP, Alakol Plant LLP, Nuclear Technology Park JSC, National Nuclear Centre of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Automation & Technology LLP, SOLO LTD LLP, VALSA LLP, PKF Ulba-Electro - Kazakhstan LLP; TVEL Corporation, RosEnergoProm Concern OJSC, AtomEnergoProm OJSC, GKAE RosAtom, Afrikantov Experimental Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering OJSC, FGUP N.L. Dukhov All-Russia Research Institute of Automatics, FGUP Priborostroitelnyi Zavod, NOU Central Institute of In-Service Training, GUP MosNPO Radon, AtomStroyExport CJSC, METLON CJSC, Gruppa SVEL CJSC, SoyuzElektroAvtomatika – Russia CJSC; HI-TECH KABEL JV LLC, O'ZKABEL – Uzbekistan JV OJSC; Gerhard Weber Kunststoff-Verarbeitung GmbH, ODDESSE Pumpen und Motoren Trade GmbH - Germany; VALON-А LLC, Transformator Service – Ukraine LLC.

Key areas of KazAtomExpo 2010 worth mentioning include: raw mineral resources of nuclear power engineering; documentation development, construction, use and equipment of nuclear power stations; packaging, transportation, escorting and disposal of radioactive waste, radiation safety; education and in-service training for personnel of nuclear facilities; scientific research in the nuclear sector; investment opportunities and projects.

“A sustainable economic growth in Kazakhstan, a dynamic and intensive development of the nuclear industry, as well as investors’ interest in the region, allowed for a new international project: Nuclear Power and Industry – KazAtomExpo 2010 Forum,” says Gulzana Akhmetova, Project Manager. “We are happy that our event is supported by the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, KazAtomProm NAC JSC, KEGOC JSC, and Kazakhstan Electricity Association (KEA). It is for the first time that Astana, the national capital, is hosting leading companies and experts from the nuclear power and engineering sector”.

The conference aims to discuss methodological, technical, environmental and social aspects of current use of nuclear power, as well as development of the nuclear industry in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Participants of this one-day-long conference include more than 70 delegates from France, Germany, Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Ukraine. More than 20 reports will be presented and discussed. Conference speakers include representatives from the Ministry of Industry and New technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, KazAtomProm NAC JSC, Committee for Nuclear Power; WM Mining Company, French Nuclear Energy Society (SFEN), MAEK-KazAtomProm LLP, NOU Central Institute of In-Service Training, GUP MosNPO Radon, Afrikantov Experimental Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering OJSC, EKOMET-S CJSC, RGP National Nuclear Centre of the Republic of Kazakhstan, etc.

The conference will discuss current development of nuclear power engineering: nuclear power station safety, nuclear power station upgrade, control of radiation situation, radioactive waste handling, uranium production and processing. Special attention will be paid to issues associated with construction of nuclear power stations in Kazakhstan: the national power safety, feasibility study of using nuclear power stations in Kazakhstan’s energy system, selection of the nuclear power station project and construction site.

Kazakhstan is known to hold the world’s second place in uranium reserves: about 19% of the world’s explored uranium reserves are found in our country. In 2009, Kazakhstan became the world’s top country in uranium production, having produced more than 14,000 tons. The state programme on industrial development of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2010-2014 has a section on nuclear industry development which includes establishment of a complete vertically integrated complex of the nuclear fuel cycle. To achieve the goal, appropriate activities are carried out to create all missing links of the nuclear fuel cycle – uranium conversion and concentration, and fuel assembly production.

“By 2020, Kazakhstan plans to commission one nuclear power station,” says Duisenbai Turganov, Vice Minister of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in his welcome letter for exhibitors. “The active interest of enterprises in KazAtomExpo 2010 demonstrates leading positions of Kazakhstan’s nuclear industry in the world, the interest in further outlooks for development of its production capacity and scientific resources, investment plans, and prospects of international cooperation”.

Vladimir Shkolnik, President of KazAtomProm NAC JSC, said in his welcome letter: “The international conference KazAtomExpo 2010 is undoubtedly an important nuclear event in Kazakhstan. The Republic of Kazakhstan possesses a significant potential for development of nuclear power engineering, and has objective prerequisites for that – implementation of KazAtomProm’s strategy on building a company with a full nuclear fuel cycle will provide the country’s nuclear power industry with nuclear fuel made within the country. No doubt, KazAtomExpo 2010 will help establish and develop scientific, technical and economic cooperation in using ‘atom for peace’. The event offers new outlooks in this area”.

“Meeting electrical power needs and a sustainable social and economic development of the humankind is tied up with use of nuclear technologies,” says Almasadam Satkaliyev, President of KEGOC JSC in his welcome letter for participants of the nuclear forum. “Considering huge natural reserves and current infrastructure for uranium production, the country’s leadership pays due attention to development of nuclear power engineering. I think that KazAtomExpo 2010 will enhance international cooperation and collaboration”.
